Student Lo Wai Fung made Hong Kong history by winning his first taekwondo match (Men’s 68 kg) at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Aug. 8, 2024. Wai Fung’ performance was encouraging as he took down his opponent Yahya Al Ghotany (of Refugee Olympic Team) swiftly in the first two sets with scores of 14 – 0 and 16 – 4.
In the top-16 round, Wai Fung faced a very strong fighter Ulugbek Rashitov, the champion from Uzbekistan who previously won in the Tokyo Olympics & the last Asian Games. Wai Fung did his best but was no match for the Uzbekistan fighter as he went down 0 – 12 and 2 – 9.
Benefitting from a repechage, Wai Fung got another chance to fight on. He had to face the Chinese athlete Liang Yu Shuai who lost to Rashitov in the top-8 round. The Chinese fighter was difficult to handle as Wai Fung tried very hard to hang on; Wai Fung eventually lost 4 – 5 and 0 – 13. Even though Wai Fung did not manage a fight for the bronze, he still wrote an important chapter in Hong Kong’s taekwondo history.
Wai Fung has gained the chance to compete at the Paris Games in the under 68kg class because an opponent he lost to in a qualifying tournament in March 2024 failed to meet requirements to represent the IOC Refugee Olympic Team and was subsequently disqualified. This became the first time Hong Kong has qualified for the event since Taekwondo became an official Olympic event in 2000.
Wai Fung was thrilled to have the chance to represent Hong Kong in the Olympics and he will be doing his utmost in preparing himself for the competition.
Previously, Wai Fung studied in the Higher Diploma in Management (Sport and Healthy Living) of HKBU-SCE; he will be starting his studies in the Physical Education & Recreation Management (PERM) programme at HKBU in September 2024.
On July 29, 2024 (Paris time), Cheung Ka Long became the first Hong Kong athlete to win consecutive gold in two Olympics. Ka Long overcame strong contenders enroute to his gold in Men’s Individual Foil event, beating Italian fencer Filippo Macchi in a nail-biting final showdown before a roaring crowd at Le Grand Palais in Paris.
In the thrilling final, Ka Long had started steadily to take a lead to a score of 9 - 6. The scores were equalised later to 10-10, before Macchi edged to an advantage of 13 points. Ka Long then dug deep in his focus and efforts to tie the scores until the match point of 14. The two fencers were so fierce, determined, so closely matched that the decisive point had to be rematched twice before Ka Long finally scored the winning point. It’s been 68 years since a last fencer to retain an Olympic foil title, consecutive gold medals are really precious and hard to come by.
Ka Long is a student majored in Physical Education & Recreation Management (PERM) at HKBU.
Daniel, a member of the Hong Kong Para-Badminton Team (and the only one in wheelchair), previously won a bronze medal in the Badminton Men’s Singles WH2 event at the Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2021. As Daniel noted earlier in the media that “The perfect way is to retire on the podium at the Paralympics,” he is determined to deliver his best performance in the 2024 Paris Games.
Earlier this year at the “Bahrain Para Badminton International 2024", Daniel won two gold medals in the WH2 men's singles event and the mixed WH1/WH2 doubles event with a Belgian player.
Serving as the Anti-Doping Ambassador of the Badminton World Federation, Daniel strongly supports the integration of the disabled and the able-bodied people. He notes that after retiring as an athlete, he will continue to spread the concept of integration in the society; and he hopes that sports for the disabled will continue to flourish in Hong Kong.
