Student Spotlight: Aron CHEUNG as one of the representatives of HKBU at Global Sustainable Development Congress in Turkey

The Global Sustainable Development Congress (GSDC) 2025, co-hosted by Turkey's Council of Higher Education and convened by Times Higher Education (THE), took place in Istanbul, Turkey, from June 16 to 19.

At the Congress, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) introduced a new initiative, namely the 6,000-square-foot "Well-being Zone", a space specially designed to promote health and wellness. It provided the participants with interactive experiences and insightful presentations ranging from mindfulness exercises, digital well-being research, as well as talks on various themes, such as mental health.

Visitors had the opportunity to engage in participatory sessions, including Tai Chi, Baduanjin, and Mindfulness Karate, allowing them to experience the relaxation and tranquility that comes from uniting body and mind, while embodying HKBU's motto, "Exercise is Medicine". Under the guidance of Mr. Aron Cheung, a student of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme and a former member of the Karatedo Team of Hong Kong, China, visitors could attempt to combine dynamic karate techniques with mindful awareness.

In a separate session, Professor Christy Cheung from the School of Business and Aron presented a digital well-being app, explaining how to use data collected from the app to analyze and track the mindfulness exercises of users. It is advancing research in mental health, pushing the boundaries of the field.

We are proud of Aron's representation of HKBU at the GSDC 2025. His efforts to promote mental health and well-being are inspiring, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact of his work in the years to come!
